There are a lot of Laboratories across Australasia and North America with the Modulab Chemtemp Extreme and in this article, we seek to give some basic pointers on how to keep this product in tip-top shape.
Basic Spills
Use household products such as domestic cleaners to clean surfaces using a soft cloth. Difficult spots can be cleaned with acetone if permitted. Wipe dry with a clean soft cloth to remove all cleaning residues and avoid water spots.
Caked-On Drips or Stains
Residues on the surface due to dragging metals across the surface (known as marring) can be removed by scrubbing with a soft cloth and soap and water solution. Difficult cases may require acetone or even use of a light-duty Scotchbrite Pad (soaked in fluid, never dry). Steam cleaning is another alternative for removing organic compound stains.
Silver Nitrate Stains
Silver Nitrate is water-soluble. Thus, if you get to the stain immediately it could be simply removed by washing with lots of water irrespective of the item or object that is directly affected. Use of Potassium Ferricyanide, Potassium Permanganate, or Potassium Dichromate has been found to be successful in reducing the intensity of the stain or removing the stain completely. Potassium Permanganate is the least hazardous option in the above.
Another method of Silver Nitrate stain removal is the immediate application of Sodium Thiosulphate solution directly to the stain. It has been proven to reduce the intensity or even remove a Silver Nitrate stain.
Harsh chemicals are often implemented as a last resort to clean up Silver Nitrate spills. So, unless the spill is really bad, stick with water-based solutions. For stubborn Silver Nitrate stain, diluted Ammonia and Hydrogen Peroxide can be a great Silver Nitrate stain cleaner. Things to Avoid on Modulab Chemtemp Extreme Epoxy Resin Tops
- Avoid thermal shock. Don’t put Liquid Nitrogen or Dry Ice directly into sinks or directly on countertops
- Avoid contact with sharp objects, hard metal tools, and abrasives.
- In food preparation areas, use a separate cutting board. Do not cut directly on the surface.
- Avoid using dry Scotchbright pads or other abrasive pads or powders which will scratch surfaces.
- Avoid using wax or polishes that contain wax.
- Avoid spilling or applying rubbing alcohol onto the surface.
- Avoid long-term exposure to sunlight or UV rays.
